GVSU got a good one in Glen Lake QB Cade Peterson.
Lake Area Offensive Player of the Week
David Kruse Sr QB Lowell: In a prime time game of the Kickoff Classic at Wayne State, Kruse ran for 126 yards and three TDs. Lowell beat Warren De La Salle 36-6..
Lake Area Defensive Player of the Week
Terry O’Connor Sr DB Traverse City Central: He made a pair of interceptions, and returned one of them for a TD in TC Central’s shutout of Bay City Western.
Lake Area Small School Player of the Week
Jacob Huysken Sr DL Schoolcraft: Given how well Schoolcraft alumnus Bryan Jones has done as a linebacker at SVSU, D2s may look favorably towards Huysken. In a shutout of Fennville he made seven tackles behind the line of scrimmage and returned a kick 75 yards for a TD.
Lake Area Northern Michigan Player of the Week
Cade Peterson Sr QB Maple City Glen Lake: The GVSU-bound signal caller ran for 176 yards and four TDs and threw for 170 yards and two TDs as the Lakers, the 2016 D4 state runnerup, opened the season with a win at Kingsley.
Lake Area Coach of the Week
Todd Kolster, Grand Rapids Catholic Central: Despite graduating studs like Michael Brown and Antonio Strong from last season’s D4 state championship team, Catholic Central went out and again beat Detroit Country Day, their opponent last November at Ford Field. This is the start of Kolster’s second four-year tenure as the Cougars head coach. He’s won a state championship in each of them.
After seeing how West Coach handle or didn’t handle the clock against Jackson and some of his play calling this maybe a sign of trouble at West?? A lot of very good teams – I think better than Jackson on the schedule – never saw a strong runner in the back field! Could be a tough one to make winning the conference let alone get 6 wins!!
